Banana Republic (Japan) | 7" Single | B: Man at the Top | 1980 | 3 | 11 weeks in the UK charts. Spent 16 weeks in the German top 20 and reached No.3 (20/05/80-19/04/81). Got to number 12 in South Africa on 25-Apr-81 and spent 5 weeks in the charts. Also a hit in Portugal. Written by Briquette and Geldof about the Republic Of Ireland, in bitterness after their infamous battle to play in their homeland in 1980 (where they were treated in the same manner as the Sex Pistols were in Britain, thanks mainly to Geldof's infamouus 1977 appearence on Gay Byrne's "Late Late Show"), the main targets being "the purple & the pinstripe" (the clergy & politicians) whom Geldof had long accused of keeping the nation a medieval minded state, using the Northern Ireland bunfight as a distraction from the fact the nation was in a mess thanks to them. |

Never in a Million Years | 7" Single | B: Don't Talk To Me | 1981 | 62 | Gerry Cott leaves the band due to musical differences & falling out with the others. Gerry handed in his resignation from the band to Fachna O'Kelly on the morning of the final date of their world tour for "Mondo Bongo". *Also released in Japan. Geldof describes the song as his favourite Rats song. The flop of "Never In A Million Years", despite good airplay, was blamed on the single cover.
